Spring is Here!

Knock on wood anyway!  After a very mild winter, we have had some amazing weather here in Calgary - It's much easier (and more enjoyable) to get out when you don't have to get all bundled up with a baby.  Over the last couple weeks we've enjoyed the sunshine and a fun visit with my sister Lynn, as well as lots of changes in Evie.

Lynn (my sister who lives in Toronto) came out to visit for 5 days last week - She has a pretty exciting life in the city as a musician (way more exciting than my life!), but was happy to spend some quality time with her niece.

Evelyn played strange a little bit at first, but after about a half a day she was pretty comfortable with Lynn.  Evie doesn't seem to play strange with Craig any more, so that's been great but she definitely isn't as easy to pass around as she used to be with new people.  I think that's pretty normal though.

The weather was amazing for Lynn's visit - probably about 15C each day give or take a couple degrees.  We took advantage of it with some long dog walks, sitting out on the back deck while Evie took her afternoon naps, and visiting to the Calgary Zoo.  We also went swimming at the Vecova pool in Calgary (a pool that they keep at like 34 degrees - very popular with mom's and babies during the day).

Evie enjoying her first picnic at North Glenmore Park (we'll have to do another picnic when she can eat something other than breast milk)

I think Evie enjoyed being outside without having to be bundled in a stroller or carrier.  Here she is looking at some trees and leaves with her Aunt Lynn

The zoo was a great place to go during the day with a baby - another place that was almost all moms with babies/kids.  I got an annual pass since I have a feeling there will be a few more visits there.  It was the first time I've been able to see some of the busier exhibits like the penguins and there were no crowds anywhere.  It's also just a very baby-friendly place (lots of space for strollers, nursing, change tables etc.).  Evie slept in her stroller for most of it, but she looked at a few animals.

Checking out the penguins - so neat to watch

Evie missed out on the cougars - I've never seen them out like this, they are usually sleeping/trying to hide.

Hippo cleaning demonstration - The funny part was that they brushed this hippo's teeth with a human electric toothbrush (he had gingivitis apparently)

One animal that Evie actually looked at was the zebra - must've been the stripes

The gorillas were definitely one of the best exhibits - they are so entertaining

This one came and sat right next to the window for about 5 minutes - totally interacting with all the human visitors

Evie enjoys hanging out on the patio too

Evie has been growing a ton it seems. The last time she was weighed was about a month ago and she was at 16 lbs.  I'm sure she's at least 17.5lbs if not more.  Carrying her around is definitely a good workout.  She is starting to outgrow most of the 3-6/6 month clothes, so I am (sadly) changing them out for the 6-12 month set.

She still hasn't rolled over and I'm starting to think she might sit before that happens. Though she has started to pull her knees up and under her a little during tummy time, so maybe she'll go front to back one of these days.

Tummy time

One of the biggest changes I've noticed in the last few weeks has been an increase in the (non-crying) noise she makes.  She makes a lot of different sounds now, and if she is just on her own she experiments with her own voice. It is pretty cute.  She seems to quiet down when others are around (probably because she is listening to their voices).

Making some noise while trying to sit (more like slump over at this point...)

She has had a pretty consistent routine for about a month now.  She usually goes to bed at about 7 and is in bed until 7am-ish.  She usually gets up twice a night, which is okay with me.  Most of the time she just eats and is happy to go back to sleep.  She still has three naps a day, two longer ones (1.5-2h) at about 9 and 3, and then a shorter one somewhere in between that is often taken in her stroller or carrier while we are walking the dogs.  It is nice to have some predictability to the day, but it also makes our schedule a bit more rigid since I can also predict how grumpy she'll be if she doesn't get her sleep - I guess that's life with a baby though, and it really is short-lived in the grand scheme of things.

She has been pretty happy over the last little while, which is awesome.  She smiles all the time, and laughs sometimes, but still not that much

I was lucky to get this on video though (I went a little overboard - just couldn't get enough)

It's hard to believe she'll be five months old this weekend.  Our next month should be exciting.  We are taking a mommy-baby bootcamp fitness class through our community association, and also the Mother Goose program at the library (songs/rhymes etc) so that should be fun.  And of course, starting solid foods at about 6 months too - Evie still isn't taking a bottle, so maybe solids will give me a little bit more freedom (though not much in the initial phases I'm sure).

Here are a few more pictures from the last little while

Playing 'rocket baby' with Daddy

Hanging out with her siblings

This is a new toy - the jolly jumper.  She doesn't jump yet, but she'll spend 15 minutes or so in there without fussing.

She's starting to get used to her high chair

Hanging out with the guard dogs

Ben and Evie (Ben is like "mom, what is that thing touching me?")

That's better :)  Ben will be a big brother very soon, so I'm sure he'll get very comfortable with babies in no time
